le fou de bassan is a seabird, the largest species of the gannet family. In Homer’s Odyssey, the sea goddess Leucothea, appears in the likeliness of a “fou de bassan”, offering her veil to a shipwrecked Odysseus to wind round himself which will save his life and enable him to reach land and come home.
